One School, One Mission: A Legacy of Faith
Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary in D’Iberville traces its roots back to the parish’s long Catholic presence on Biloxi’s Back Bay. What became Sacred Heart Parish began as a mission community in 1859, served by neighboring priests for decades. A major turning point came in 1921, when Bishop John Gunn appointed Fr. Patrick Carey as the first resident pastor.
Under Fr. Carey’s leadership, the parish opened its school in 1927, originally named St. Therese (the Little Flower of Jesus) and staffed by the Vicksburg Sisters of Mercy—a relationship that has continued in parish life ever since. As D’Iberville grew (especially during and after WWII), Sacred Heart expanded to meet the needs of families. For decades, St. Therese formed generations of students in faith, academics, and service, becoming a cornerstone of Catholic life along the Back Bay of Biloxi.
As the parish and community grew, Sacred Heart expanded its facilities and mission. A new church was dedicated in 1970, followed by the construction and dedication of the Sacred Heart Elementary School building in 1974, continuing the educational legacy begun at St. Therese. After suffering significant damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the school was restored and reopened in 2007, standing as a sign of faith and perseverance. Today, Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary proudly carries forward the heritage of both Sacred Heart and St. Therese—forming students in truth, service, and love of God, while honoring the generations who built its foundation.
Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary serves students in a faith-filled environment that blends strong academics with Catholic identity, character formation, and community life. The school continues to nurture young disciples through prayer, service, and excellence in the classroom, while remaining deeply connected to Sacred Heart Parish and its alumni families. Rooted in tradition and committed to the future, Sacred Heart stands as a living witness to the legacy begun nearly a century ago at St. Therese School.
